Many think the contract is a bad idea. Ten years is too long of a deal. If you take a look at hoe many coaches in the league now have been in their jobs for 10 years or longer, the list consists of Bill Belichick, Marvin Lewis, Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh. That’s rather short. Additionally the Oakland Raiders organization gives up a lot of money, over $100m is reported in the press.
While I can see that the enthusiasm by many can lead to the notion of Gruden being overrated in his capacities as a football coach, I also think it is a good move to hire him. Specially with a focus on a long term that allows to make long reaching decisions to build up over a period of several football seasons. He may end up staying there for ten years. I can certainly see it. The chances are there.
